This week I have not been posting much. Why? Because it has been awesome weather and I have been busy walking around in Amsterdam. 15 degrees Celsius and blue skies is a blessing in March. At least for a Finn (and a Swede), so I have not even opened my computer or email. After a long, dark winter, all that vitamin D is so welcome. I also had no idea that Amsterdam is such a Mecca for foodies. We enjoyed great, inexpensive wines and interesting restaurants; walked on the scenic canals nursing coffee and fresh croissants; and slept in to catch up on the sleep deprivation known well to parents of small children. This week has been awesome! A-W-E-S-O-M-E! The beginning of the year has been so slow that I feel like I have been awakened from a long hibernation. Even the flu has not stopped me this week as we have had one nice meal after another. What am I ranting about? Well our nights out at Cafe Nizza and Mathias Dahlgrens Matbaren of course. We also drank some nice wines at home as well as tasted a range of Taittinger champagnes at our wine cellar. Yes! It has been a week of food and wine, and I feel very excited to tell all about it. The weekend has been short but relaxing. I don’t know if I even mentioned it, but I have been in London, spending some time with my big sister who lives there. She does not drink, so I have not had much wine (just a bottle of Margaret River Sauvignon Blanc), but it has been a sweet weekend with a lot of girl talk, retail therapy (shopping) and long naps. I have been working my ass off all fall, so I really needed those naps. Now I am sitting on the SAS flight back home ready to take on the world again tomorrow. . Lately I have been reading this book. Its called the Hostage at the Table, recommended to me by a colleague at work. Its a bit creepy, but keeping an open mind it does provide some good insight on how to focus. I am a change manager after all and work with topics of emotional connection. Anyway, this book has some good stuff on keeping the eyes on the prize. With the darkest time of the year approaching (I mean physically, not mentally) and the trip to Barcelona behind me, I need some light at the end of the tunnel – a trip to look forward to. Yes! Wow! A hundred weeks of writing. I cant believe I have made it this far. I am a bit the type that I like the beginnings of things, so there is always a danger that I grow bored and quit after a while. But this blog has always given me new energy. I must confess, I had a great title in mind: what started with Cava will end with Cava. I have been a bit stressed with time this fall, so giving up the blog would have freed up a few hours. But I don’t really want to stop, so I will save this title for the day that writing is not fun anymore.
And its not only the writing that makes me happy. Along the way I have learned a lot about wine. I am a complete amateur after all, but these days can easily present myself around wine-knowledgeable people. If not for the blog, I would have not taken so many hours to myself to study. Additionally, I am becoming more and more of a confident photographer. I still struggle with pictures of people and other moving objects, but my food photos are beginning to look quite delicious. At least to my own eye.
Along with all the skills I have developed, the wine business has given us a lot of happiness. I was just reflecting on it when standing at the Torelló counter at Cavatast. We were surrounded by people we have met in the recent years. Today we call them friends. Our glasses were full (of Torelló Brut Nature Gran Reserva) and we were picking on pieces of meat that was being passed around. Music was playing and people were laughing. I felt very blessed. Or perhaps deserving. We have worked a lot. We have made a huge effort to connect with people and bond. I will remember these moments better than I will remember any paycheck.
So what started with Cava will continue with Cava; and other wines and food as well. Who knows, maybe I will be publishing a Wineweek 200 in two years time. And as always, I will continue to write whatever pops into my head at that time. Not that I can say I have been very successfull with a huge number of readers. However, that is how I enjoy writing the most.
Stockholm has woken up from its summer hibernation. The city is buzzing with people and restaurants are open again. Luckily the weather still reminds of summer. I am not that sensitive to fall coming though. Fall means Cavatast; fall means my birthday; and fall means that winter vacation is closer. Yes! We have booked a long trip to Asia again. Bangkok and Singapore, here we come. I should publish some pictures from last year to remissness. This weekend I have encountered some technical problems. Yesterday I tried to publish a post, but just ended up spending hours cursing the internet. It happens, I know. But I still let it get to me. Had to calm the nerves down with some wine. I remember there was a time when I was convinced I would not even try to up to quality of the photos on this site. Getting into food photography is quite annoying. First of all you are always dragging your camera to the restaurant. The light is often a bit poor, and people stare at you when you bring out the arsenal (My big camera I mean). Sometimes I also get these looks from M where he is signaling to put the Nikon away because the food is getting cold. Second, it takes quite a lot of time to select and edit the photos you like. Regardless of these two small obstacles, I have become a an amateur food photographer, and you can view my work in all its glory from now on in Flickr. I have only downloaded my pics from the past few weeks, so there is more to come very soon.
It is already a week since we boarded a train back to Paris from Champagne. Time goes by fast, as these photos make me feel like they were taken yesterday. Ok, so a week is not that long of a time, but it still feels almost unfair how short days have become. I still remember a time when minutes felt like hours and hours like days. Finally I have a chance to post some proper pictures. I was running around with my camera all week in New York, however, was not able to edit them before returning home. The only place I skipped having the camera was 11 Madison Park. I felt it was slightly inappropriate to hover over all of the nice dishes with my heavy Nikon. The first week of March. Is it spring yet? Who cares. Rose season is here and we celebrated by opening a small bottle of Ruinart. It isn’t as great as the Billecart-Salmon, but decent still. Clearly a food-rose. Usually the “season” starts here in Sweden around Easter and lasts until mid-summer. However, rose is fashionable all summer and goes really well with some of the Nordic cuisine: new potatoes, salmon and grilled meats. We are also prepping ourselves to the start of rose sales by studying (read about discoveries here) and getting some samples from our great producers. Last year we sold out of rose.
